QUEEN BEES – Great vehicle for older actresses Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret, Jane Curtain, Loretta Devine and James Caan in what would be one of his last film roles. Unfortunately, the story is contrived and boring and just not very good. I’m glad these folks are still working, but they need to find a different scriptContinue reading

BODKIN – I enjoy almost everything set in Ireland or Scotland and this show is no exception. Netflix’s 7-episode mystery/comedy series is quite entertaining. The lead actor, Siobhán Cullen, reminds me so much of Catríona Balfe from Outlander. They could be sisters, and I keep seeing Catríona in the role. Sit back, pour a weeContinue reading
THE GENTLEMEN – Delightful!! Murder, mayhem and a clandestine marijuana farm are afoot when an old English estate is inherited by the scrumptious Theo James. Written, directed and produced by Guy Ritchie, and loaded with talented actors including Giancarlo Esposito from Breaking Bad, it’s a smart, sexy romp and we’re along for the ride. Oh,Continue reading
WE HAVE A GHOST – A Netflix original film. Decent acting but the story’s lame. Skip it! Cheers! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.
IRISH WISH – Lindsay Lohan stars in this romantic comedy set in Ireland, of course. RomCom’s are not my thing. I only watched because of the Irish locale and co-stars Ed Speleers and Alexander Vlahos…all three lovely to look at. As usual, this one was predictable and not very good. A few laughs. I didContinue reading
THE DIPLOMAT – Smart, sassy and fun! Keri Russell (The Americans) shines along with the diverse cast in this new NetFlix series. A few recognizable faces, but mostly unknown actors, turn in great performances in this fast-paced satire of political and personal angst, and the intersection of the two, with much of the story rootedContinue reading
THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR – is indeed wonderful! This short film written and directed by Wes Anderson, based on a Roald Dahl story and starring A-list actors is truly a work of art. Told in what I call video book, the actors are actually reading you the story while portraying the characters. TheContinue reading
MAESTRO – Bravo!!! An exquisite work of art! Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan are captivating as legendary composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia. I was mesmerized. Expect numerous Oscar nominations for this one. Cheers! Boyfriends – 0; Girlfriends – 1.
MAY DECEMBER – Loosely based on the MaryKay Letourneau scandal, this film is just as weird and disturbing as the actual events. Also it drags. I didn’t like it. If you’re curious about the shocking 1996 sexual relationship between a 34-year-old teacher and her 12-year-old student, check it out. Otherwise, skip it. Cheers! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.
THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (Addendum) Now that I’ve finished the series and talked with Kelly who watched with me, I have a few things to add. We like the way Flanagan incorporates current events into the story – He bases his Ushers on the Sackler family (Dope Sick); he makes reference toContinue reading
