GOOD OMENS – As delightful and entertaining as the book, a cult classic! Neil Gaiman’s apocalyptic TV tale is loaded with the same irreverent humor, and brought to life by a cast gleefully embracing their roles. Like the book, it’s convoluted at times. Doesn’t matter. It’s a wild romp of good vs. evil and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride! Cheers! Boyfriends – 1; Girlfriends – 0.

GUNTHER’S MILLIONS – Wealthy heiress dies and leaves fortune to her German Shepherd. Four hundred million to be exact. Or maybe not. After all, a human needs to manage the funds, right? This dog has more folks on the payroll than Elon Musk…with a lifestyle much more decadent and depraved I presume! The only requirement (according to the Will) – the dog must be present in this lifestyle at all times. Translation: the dog is exploited, many Gunther heirs must be bred to keep the bloodline (and millions) flowing and there must be a stand-in canine at events for security reasons. If you’re already nauseous, it gets better. The whole heiress story is a pack of lies to avoid taxation and worst of all, in the end, many of Gunther’s heirs were kept in horrid conditions and had to be rescued by police. Heartbreaking. Cheers to the producers for exposing the truth is this documentary! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.

THE LIGHTHOUSE – Another disturbing, confusing film. Two lighthouse caretakers in 1890 go slowly mad from isolation and abuse. Filmed in black & white, and featuring only two actors for the entire piece (Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson), the work is terrific and the mood foreboding. Horrific two hours! Cheers! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.

THE MAYFAIR WITCHES – Anne Rice’s novel comes to life in this mysterious tale of black magic within a New Orleans coven of sorceresses. This one is right up my alley and I’m enjoying it. The only issue is it airs on AMC which means it’s short on show time and long on commercials. Exceedingly frustrating. Cheers! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.

THE LAST OF US – Peeps are losing their minds over this show! Kelly says it’s sensational. Mike has a regular Sunday night viewing with his Boston friends. Ryan and Krista are blown away. Christine rushes home from work to watch it. Me – I agree the acting is quite good and the relationships engaging. But – I can’t get into the zombie/apocalypse storyline. It’s never been my thing. Plus this disaster is caused by a virus which coming out of a pandemic has zero interest for me. The show is based on a video game and it consists of endless running, hiding, shooting and whiny screeching zombies..most of which takes places in the dark. Boring! The two leads, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, both featured in Game of Thrones and I’ve enjoyed their performances in both shows. Unanimous toasts from the peeps. A sip from me. Cheers! Boyfriends – 1; Girlfriends – 1.

BABYLON – Every Oscar nominated film I’ve watched so far is long. Too long. All of them. This one is no exception. It’s a depraved story of Hollywood in the 20s and 30s as it transitions from silent movies to talkies. It’s a real downer and I found many scenes hard to watch. Brad Pitt’s character was the only somewhat likable one in the piece. His scenes provided a bit of comic relief, and were a welcome break from the overall drudgery, though the entire cast was top notch. Cheers! Boyfriends – 1; Girlfriends – 1.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE – The title is certainly appropriate! It was impossible for me to follow and/or understand what was happening in this sci/fi film. Science fiction is not my thing and the movie is two hours and twenty minutes long. The frantic bits (and there were many) made my head hurt. Despite that, I got the gist of it which is love prevails. Even more surprising, I liked it. I’m not sure why. Maybe it was the novel albeit perplexing script. Maybe it was the Chinese dialogue interspersed throughout. Maybe it was the outstanding performances by the entire cast. Michelle Yeoh and most of the supporting actors are nominated for an Oscar. Jamie Lee Curtis delivers with glee and 93-yr-old James Hong is always delightful! Maybe it’s all of that. Whatever the reason…..Cheers! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.

BLONDE – It’s important to state right off the bat this film is not a documentary or biography. It’s a fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroe’s life taken from the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. While much of it is factual and based on actual events, some of it is simply the author’s imagination. That said, it’s an artsy film that captures the essence of the icon. It’s a tragic, heartbreaking story told in a surreal atmosphere of disturbing events. Extraordinary, unique cinematography creates the evocative tone. The use of black & white versus color within scenes is genius, as is the editing. Ana de Arma is worthy of her Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She carries this film from start to finish portraying Marilyn as a vulnerable, abused little girl…Norma Jean…always in search of love, her identity, her father and in desperate need of help. Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio and Aidan Brody as Arthur Miller deliver the goods portraying icons themselves. Brad Pitt is one of the producers. The movie is too long, almost three hours. I had to watch it in segments. Some scenes drag. Overall, though, the film delivers on its intention. Cheers! Boyfriends/Girlfriends – 0.

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN – Living on an island off the coast of Ireland in 1923, a simple man, his sister and his beloved animals – particularly a darling donkey named Jenny – contend with the challenges and boredom of small town isolation. There is comedy throughout this film, but overall the story is bleak and filled with sadness. The scenery is beautiful, the animals endearing and the work – excellent. Kerry Condon as Siobhán is superb. So is Barry Keoghan as Dominic. There is well deserved Oscar buzz around this picture, but the depressing content left me in the same condition. Cheers! Boyfriends – 0; Girlfriends – 2…including the donkey, Jenny.
